Halloween Home Saftey Tips

Halloween is right around the corner and families across the country are getting their costumes ready and hanging decorations in preparation for one of the most festive nights of the year. Whether you are planning to roam the neighborhood with a trick-or-treater or have already started “sampling” from your bowl of candy, it’s important to consider the safety of your home on this busy night. Below are five easy ways to ensure trick-or-treaters have fun and homeowners have peace-of-mind.

1. Keep the path clear for trick-or-treaters. Ensure the lawn, steps, pathways and porches are clear of debris. Things like garden hoses or decorations can cause people to trip – especially in the dark.

2. Use artificial candles or a flashlight to light up pumpkins. While they are a great way to illuminate a spooky Jack-O-Lantern, candles are also a fire hazard.

3. Put your home security system to work. Today’s security systems go way beyond arming and disarming the front door. Use your home’s different security zones and sensors to ensure all windows and back entrances are protected.

4. Turn on the lights. Even if you are out trick-or-treating, keeping your lights turned on is the best way to deter unwanted company by giving off the impression you are home.

5. Use mobile technology to check in! Just because you aren’t at home, does not mean you can’t see what is going on. Companies like Honeywell have developed mobile apps for smartphones that can tap into your home’s security system, giving you the ability to access video cameras, check on pets, turn on lights and lock or unlock doors.
