5 Homemade Halloween Costumes Anyone Can Make

Halloween is less than 2 months away and is fast-approaching. I see stores have already brought out halloween costumes for sale. If you are on a budget, save money on these great tips and making your own. The following is a guest post by Paul Taylor. Thank-you Paul, for the great article.

When I was a child I always enjoyed helping my mother make our Halloween costumes. We could be anything we wanted to be, without regard to price. While my mother wasn’t the craftiest of people, she was very creative and used her skills to make costumes that impressed all the other children. You can do the same, even if you are not at home in front of a sewing machine. Here are five easy to make Halloween costumes that your kids will love:

1. Mouse, Cat, or Bunny – An animal is always a big hit with kids and very easy to make. Just get a sweatshirt and matching sweatpants in the right color (grey, black, or brown) and then a piece of material to make the stomach and tail. Cut an oval shape and pin, sew or glue it to the sweatshirt to make the stomach area. Then create a long cone shape for the tail and pin it to the back of the sweatpants. Complete the outfit with a headband that you glue on either paper ears or wrap with wire and then cover with socks. Use face paint to draw a nose and whiskers and you’re done!

2. Grapes or Jelly Beans – All you need for this outfit is a few balloons and some imagination! For grapes, get green or purple balloons with a matching sweat outfit underneath. Pin the inflated balloons all over the outfit for a cluster of grapes. Add a green beanie for the stem! For the jelly beans, get pastel colored balloons and a large clear plastic sack. Pin the inflated balloons to the outfit and then cut leg holes in the sack, tying it loosely around the child’s neck with ribbon. Make sure the child is old enough not to get hurt by the plastic!

3. Lego – All you need is a box, some plastic cups, and spray paint. Get an outfit in whichever Lego color you want to make and then cut leg, arm, and head holes in the box. Cut the plastic cups in half and glue upside down to the front of the box. Spray paint the whole thing a bright color and voila, your child is a Lego!

4. Bum or Motorcyclist –This is easy and can work with things you already have around the house. For a bum, get jeans with holes in them, old shoes, and a flannel shirt. Draw a stubble beard on the child with face paint. For the motorcyclist, get black pants and a black t-shirt with the sleeves cut off. Draw on tattoos and a beard with face paint. Add a head scarf for extra scariness!

5. Robot – Another box costume, this one is very easy. Get a box and cut out leg, arm, and head holes. Cover the box with either silver spray paint or aluminum foil. Decorate with wires or any other electronics you have lying around.

These costumes are very easy for anyone to make. It is always a lot of fun working with your children to create their own one-of-a-kind costumes for Halloween. Remember that you don’t have to buy a costume, anyone can make their own!
