The Original Kit-Cat Clock

Since the mid 1930's (in the midst of the Great Depression), the Kit-Cat Clock has been inspiring hope and entertaining the world with his rolling eyes and wagging tail. Go here to read more about the history of how the Kit-Cat Clock came about.

I was given the opportunity to share with you my review on the black classic Kit-Cat clock. It reminds me of Felix the cat. We love cats. Even our cat, Momo, thought the clock was interesting and stared at the wagging tail on the wall. We hung it on the wall in little Brandon's playroom. It gives a fun feeling and makes the room more entertaining. I find it very adorable. This is quite a unique item and makes a great gift.

When I opened the box, it didn't come with instructions, but installation and set-up was fairly simple. You need to push the bottom to "lift" out the back cover. Then Remove the sponge inside and the tape from the pendulum. The clock requires two C-type batteries. After installing the batteries, attach the tail and hang it on the wall. I just tap the tail lightly to the side to get it going. Brandon was quite amused with it.

I also received a Hallmark style greeting card with a photo of Kit-Cat on the cover. The card shows the real sentiment behind why many people give a Kit-Cat as a gift to a loved one. Inside the card reads:

"Put a smile on everyone's face;
Love in everyone's heart;
And -- be a positive force in
everyone's life!

Every time you look at
Kit-Cat, let your smile
Come out, it's time to
Remember that you are
Special to me!"

WHERE TO BUY: Kit-Cat Klock and other merchandise are available for purchase at www.kit-cat.com. Mention my blog "Baby Brandon's Adventures" and you'll get a FREE greeting card ($2.99) with your order.

Disclosure: I received the above mentioned product from the PR Firm/Company in exchange for my review. The opinions expressed in my review are my own personal and honest thoughts. No other compensation was given.

Preschool Field Trip to the Firestation

On Wednesday, May 16th, the preschool morning class went on a field trip. This was Brandon's first visit to the fire station (Fire Hall No. 15). The parents took the kids and met up with the class at the location. It was a fun day for the kids. They got to sit in the fire truck, meet the firemen and check out the gear, as well as watch the demo of the fireman going up the ladder on the firetruck. At the end, each of the kids had their own fire chief helmet and a coloring book.

Tips for Parents

Bringing Up Little Angels
Children’s Authors Offer Character-Building Tips

A recent rash of news stories highlights the positive in society’s youngest members: “Child Saves Kids from Bus Crash;” “Child Saves His Brother from Possible Abduction;” “Child Saves Family from House Fire.”

But all too often, the news involving children indicates a dangerous lack of morality: 7- and 8-year-olds stealing cars; a 9-year-old’s recent shooting of a school classmate; a 12-year-old charged with armed robbery. A particularly bad one nearly 20 years ago shocked sisters Debbie Burns and Patty Cockrell. Two 10-year-old truants abducted a toddler in England, tortured the little boy and beat him to death.

It prompted the women to begin work on Tukie Tales: A New Beginning for a Better Tomorrow, a series of five children’s books designed to help parents teach young children important values.

“There is something especially senseless in reading about small children committing sadistic crimes,” Burns says. “We wanted to be part of a ‘positive push’ in the right direction.”

The younger the child, the more impressionable they are, she says. We wanted to help busy parents scrambling to make ends meet teach children empathy, compassion, environmental awareness and other values.

“I don’t think parents are bad,” she says. “But with all the economic worries, the job losses and home foreclosures, many are focused on working and worrying. It’s hard to also be thinking, ‘What value will I teach my child today?’ ”

Burns and Cockrell offer tips for parents to help positively shape children:

Promote a love for nature: Are your kids outdoors much? Parents who are busying shuttling their sons and daughters from one building to another may overlook the benefits of the great outdoors. Wilderness, however, has a therapeutic effect on indoor dwellers. Spending time in nature also helps children learn about their place in the world and the value of all the life that shares space with us.

Show the value of teamwork: Working together toward a common goal doesn’t always come naturally to children – or adults. Many youngsters learn teamwork through sports, which is good but almost always includes a competitive element. It’s important for children to experience the added benefits of creating, problem-solving and getting chores done as a team. Parents should look for opportunities to point out their children’s great teamwork.

Make sure they appreciate safety: No good parent wants to unnecessarily frighten their children, but carelessness leads to bad habits, injuries and opportunities for others to do them harm. The best medicine for any problem is prevention. Remember: Don’t take for granted that your young child knows what’s safe and what’s not. Some years ago, someone taught you that stoves can burn your hand – even though you can’t remember who or when it was.

Build their confidence with at least one skill: Remember what it’s like to be 4 years old? Very young children come into this world with no previous experience, which means their brains are hungry for know-how. Knowledge and skills to a child are like water for a thirsty man in the desert.

• Kindness counts: It is one thing to teach kids the old idiom that one catches more flies with honey than with vinegar. But children should also know that people who make kindness a habit tend to be happier; there is an inherent joy in helping others.

“I understand parents are busy earning a living to support their children,” Cockrell says. “But who you raise in the process makes all the difference to the future world.”

About Debbie Burns & Patty Cockrell

Burns and Cockrell are sisters and best friends. They were determined to instill honest and wholesome values in their children after establishing their families. Deeply affected by the bad news of the world, they decided to promote a better experience for children. The “Tukie Tales” series is written with compassion and love for all of the world’s children in the hope of making a positive difference.

Walmart's Mom of the Year Award

Mother's Day has just passed, but to me Mother's Day is every day because we're always putting in so much effort and hard work for the best to each of our families. It was my third celebration for Mother's Day and I am so grateful to be a wonderful mom to little Brandon. He makes me so proud (most of the time). As mentioned from my previous post, Brandon made me a card at school with a framed photo of himself as a gift. That night, he hugged me and said out of the blue, "I love you, Mommy!" It was really touching and it almost made me cry.

Without question, motherhood is a labour of love. Remember the stupor of the first few days of motherhood? The weight of the responsibility of your new role overshadowed only by the intense love you now felt for this needy little being? It felt like your life had been turned upside down, and yet somehow you made it work.

The past couple of years, I've met many moms that have inspired me. Since I've starting blogging a lot more and meeting other moms through blogging networks, I have learned a lot from them. There are moms who go to great lengths to ensure their families thrive, moms who have sacrificed their career for their family (that includes me), moms who have worked to raise money for a cause they believe in and moms who have stood up and worked to make their community a better place.

About the Mom of the Year Award:

I am excited to announce that this year, Walmart is launching the Mom of the Year Award to help celebrate and recognize the huge contribution moms make as role models and integral members of the family and community. This award will become an annual program to celebrate all that Moms do and shine a light on what is important to them. Nominations will be accepted Mother’s Day (May 13) through July 8, 2012 and can be submitted through www.momoftheyear.ca. This is going to be an exciting event that I am happy share with all of you.

Eight finalists will be selected and notified in mid-August and will be treated to an award celebration weekend in September. The Mom of the Year Award recipient will receive $10,000 for personal use and $100,000 to their cause or charity of choice. The remaining seven finalists will each receive $10,000 for personal use and $10,000 to their cause or charity of choice. Can you imagine the impact you could have on your favourite charity with that much money?

Nominate a special mom in your life or maybe YOU could be the Mom of the Year!

Disclosure: I’m part of the Walmart program by Mom Central. I received compensation as a thank you for my participation. The opinions on this blog are my own. Mom of the Year Award: NO PURCHASE NECESSARY Internet access and valid email account required. Nominations open May 10, 2012 to July 8, 2012 for legal residents of Canada over the age of majority.
